Penguin Classics All Books Editorial Review
The Penguin Classics edition of the Tao Te Ching, translated by Ursula K. Le Guin, is highly recommended for those new to the text due to its accessible writing style and helpful notes. The text provides a unique combination of spirituality, common sense advice, and enigmatic contradictions that provoke reflection. As one of the foundations of East Asian thought, the Tao Te Ching has been translated into many languages and is still studied today. The text is open to a wide variety of interpretations and each read-through offers a new understanding of the philosophical concepts presented. The edition includes full-page pictures and the original Chinese text opposite the translation. Chen's translation with commentary is also explained to be the best contemporary explication and does well to include both Chinese and Western philosophical perspectives on the Taoist philosophy.
