Russian Editorial Review
Golosa: A Basic Course in Russian, Book One offers a unique but flawed approach to teaching Russian. While it contains content that could theoretically aid learners, many users express frustration regarding its organization and pedagogical methods. For instance, basic pronunciation rules are introduced only after 200 pages, and case declensions are taught in a piecemeal fashion that often confuses rather than clarifies. Notably, the book assumes a relatively passive approach to learning, seeming to believe that learners will be overwhelmed by grammatical concepts rather than empowered by them. This goes against the natural method of mastering grammar before diving into vocabulary, leading many to feel defeated in their language journey.
