"One Soldier's War" is a brutal and unsentimental memoir of Babchenko's experiences during two tours of duty in Chechnya. The book is disturbing yet moving, offering a glimpse into the horrors of war and its effects on human beings. Babchenko uses clear and simple language to describe the fear, brutality, privation, hatred, looting, incomprehension, lies, comradeship, incompetence, bravery, cowardice, and drunkenness that he and his fellow soldiers faced. He also discusses the rampant bullying and mistreatment of new recruits by older soldiers, as well as the political cynicism and indifference that sent thousands of young men to die. Babchenko's account is graphic and gory, but also poignant and eye-opening.
